Boxing is a gruesome sport.
Those of us that follow the sport closely can kid ourselves by calling it the "sweet science" and marveling at the technical and athletic skill necessary to be successful in boxing, but in the end, fighters aim at punishing themselves to the brink of severe injury
The human brain was not designed to be rattled several hundred time over the course of approximately one hour.
Last night in Manila, Philippines, the North Hollywood's Brian Viloria lost his IBF junior flyweight title at the hands of Colombian Carlos Tamara via a brutal 12th round technical knock-out and then collapsed in the dressing room.
Upon collapsing, Viloria was rushed to San Juan de Dios where veteran boxing scribe Ronnie Nathanielsz reports Viloria was unattended for 30 minutes forcing television broadcast executives and Viloria's manager Gary Gittelsohn to move the fighter to the Makiti Medical Center where he received a full examination and is being held over night.
I tip my hate to Solar Sports (which broadcast the fight) executives Wilson Tseng and Peter Chanliong and Gittelsohn for doing the right thing and getting Viloria the medical attention needed.
For the record, Tamara's super human-like ability to take Viloria's best punches, chase him down all night, and eventually come from behind with a 12th round barrage which left the "Hawaiian Punch" defenseless before the bout was stopped is an early Fight of the Year candidate.
It is just difficult to rejoice in the best boxing can give when one of the combatants is in the hospital as a result of the brutality we call a sport.

Man hope everything is alright...Viloria is one of my fav fighters all of his bouts are must see tv....www.theboxingtruth.com
I'm just glad there are no worthwhile drug testing for these fighters. They should be able to use PEDs to punch harder, stronger and faster and to be able to keep going. Only a coward would want to change that.
What a great way to write yourself out of the sport. Every extreme sport is dangerous.when you get to that point where you have totally exerted yourself. Football, soccer, skiing, triathlon, marathon, rock climbing, wrestling, should I continue? Nobody is made to ram their heads, rum for miles, swim for miles, climb on rocks, etc. But we do it because not many are able, that's why we call it a sport.
Dang Columbian fighters are IRON FIST...lol
2 fighters already suffer some brain damage from Columbian fighters...those guys punch like stone i guess..lol
I think Viloria should retire. He is a good fighter but over the years, you can really see that he doesn't have the skills and power to stay competitive in the sport. I admire him for his strength and courage but in the end, you should know when to call it quits.
He lost cause he didn't take his PED's and steroids. Nothing more.
that's why i make sure i have my juice to protect my 0.
12th is a classic display of human spirit.
VBrian Villoria didn't have more gas, but my gosh he kept on fighting and disn't run. i watched it again and again on youtube.
Brian knew he had nothing left but kept the show going so bravely.
watch it folks. amazing. hats off to brian. there are too many e quitters and runners out there.
yo just train for stamina and i'll watch your next fight again for sure.
i think Viloria should go down to an 8 rounder fights or 6, otherwise, it's best for him to retire.. Save Brian from himself.
#1floydfan i know u r pinoy, pinoy used to be alaskador with fellow pinoy.
@ wpxx0037
Please NEVER and I mean NEVER say that I am dirtypino. I'm Polynesian bitch!
It's funny how articles before his fight with Tamara labeled him as the Pinoy Punch. Now that he's lost, people are re-calling him again as the Hawaiian Punch. Talk about backstabbing,
@floydfan:
Hey, polynesian bitch. Never call filipino a
PED user. We are honest people, not like you. if we uses PED, we are already no. 1 in every sports, know what I mean. Maybe you urself had used PED, that's why you're such a master on this. So you better keep your mouth shut, bitch!!
For those who said that Viloria ran out of gas due to over training are STUPID. This is the same reason and excuse usually made by ALA of Cebu when their boxers lose stamina on the late rounds. ALA training system is the worst in the world and their boxers are the laziest kind. Viloria is just a mediocre boxer. All his past wins were all fluke. ALA boxers on the other hand always fought and will always fight tuktuk drivers. They will not fight quality opponents because if they do they will end up in hospital. Viloria and ALA have a similarity.
#1floydfan..take your medicine, or else!!! your fellow are waiting for your return in mental hospital
he collapse in the dressing room because of shame not because of the punches.
MAN,EL PADRE MAYWEATHER HAS ANOTHER FIGHTERS TO ACCUSE OF TAKING ENHANCERS-THE WINNING COLOMBIAN FIGHTERS!! THAT'S WHAT THE EX-CON HAVE IN HIS TINY BRAIN!! OYE BOXEADORES COLOMBIANOS QUE GANARON , TEN CUIDADO CON ESTE CRIMINAL!!EL TIENE MUCHO HUMO EN SU CEREBRO SIEMPRE DRODADO!!!
VILORIA BAROK................BETTER RETIRE!BECAUSE YOU TOO SMALL AND YOU DRINK ALOT...........ANYWAY YOU MADE IT TO THE TOP SO BETTER RETIRE AND THINK ABOUT YOUR LIFE....GOOD LUCK BAROK!
One example is already there and that is what Floyd want to happen. There was no blood taken out from Viloria yet he collapsed. How much more if it weakens the boxer if the blood was drawn before the fight?
AT gayweather.. you're talking as if you saw everything. Did you watch round 12? if not go watch it before you talk.
Don't mind #floydfan..HE IS USELESS. We argued and he cannot even defend himself. He is here to annoy. Not talking to him is LIKE an insult. let him go away.
BV should maybe just fight in Japan and clean up all the Japanese in his division easy money for BV don't retire yet
I think something is wrong with this picture. This is the 2nd Filipino fighter who suffered head trauma to a Columbian boxer in just a matter of 2 months. I wonder if Tamara and Melendez have the same trainer/manager? Could this be both a case of plastered wraps? Something is definitely fishy with this.
brian give us one hell of a fight...and i thank him for that,.. above all and the most important thing is that he's safe now.
The sport of boxing should be labeled as the brutal bitter-sweet science.
Well Ricardo, I used to hate your article as you overtly show strong biased against Pacquiao for no good reason but I noticed lately that you have become more of a balanced writer. I appreciate good journalism such as Marley who can either write positive or negative stuff on Pacquiao but remains level headed and give credit where it is due. You have learned well.
I tip my hat to you on this article for showing compasion for the plight of an injured fighter who may not be as popular as Pacquiao, Mosely, Mayweather orthe oher biggies.
Got something to say?
