The NASCAR Nationwide Series has the next two weekends off, but Joe Gibbs Racing will be spending at least part of that time looking for a driver to fill its No. 20 seat for the final three races of the 2013 Nationwide Series season, beginning with the Nov. 2 race at Texas Motor Speedway. Brian Vickers, the regular driver of the No. 20, will be sidelined for the rest of the season after being put on blood-thinning medication by his doctor on Monday because of a blood clot discovered in his right leg.
"We are praying Brian will have a quick and full recovery from this latest issue," car owner Joe Gibbs said. "Everyone at JGR appreciates all the hard work and effort he has given our Nationwide Series program this year. He is a great competitor, and we look forward to seeing him back on the track in 2014."
Vickers also missed most of the 2012 NASCAR season, while a driver for Red Bull Racing in the Sprint Cup Series, because of blood clotting issues.
Vickers was also slated to finish out the 2013 season as the driver of the No. 55 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing in the Sprint Cup Series. Car owner Michael Waltrip will drive that car at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway on Sunday and Vickers' Nationwide Series teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing, Elliott Sadler, will drive the No. 55 for the remainder of the Cup season, in addition to fulfilling Nationwide Series driving duties for JGR.
