Brian Vickers won the 2003 NASCAR Busch (Nationwide) Series at 19 and has since raced 199 races in the Sprint Cup Series. Sunday’s AAA 400 at Dover International Speedway will mark the 200th start at the Sprint Cup level. Vickers was upbeat about the milestone.
“Two hundred starts? Wow! Makes me feel old,” Vickers said. “It’s pretty cool when you think about it. It’s a big accomplishment. I’m glad to have been involved in the sport, at this level, for that long. It’s only going to get better as it goes on and I progress in my career.”
His 200th start will be his second start in the Chase for the Sprint Cup where the No 83 team occupies the eighth position of 12 contenders. The 90 points between Vickers and the leader Mark Martin is no steep climb at this point as much can happen in nine races. No one, even the team of last place Kasey Kahne, can be considered out of contention.
Even though this Chase is Vickers first Chase his 200 starts give him the experience to contend and win. As Vickers sees it, “I’m not really a veteran, but not a rookie.”
Youth is still on his side too as his 26th birthday in next month.
“How many people can say they are doing what they love at any age? That’s the really cool part,” said Vickers.
Doing what he loves might lead to another NASCAR championship especially if the team and driver continue to produce results on NASCAR’s many tracks.
Vickers may be new to the Chase but he is no rookie. His team may be only two years old, but they know how to win and be consistent.
Consistency is the substance of champions.
