Brian McKnight's ex says accused Laura Ackerson murderers not monsters

Raleigh, NC – On Wednesday, Julie McKnight, the ex-wife of singer Brian McKnight, spoke out about those accused of murdering Laura Ackerson saying they are not monsters.

Grant Hayes, 32, and his wife Amanda Hayes, 39, have been charged in the gruesome murder of North Carolina mother, Laura Ackerson, whose dismembered body was found in Texas on Sunday.

Hayes and Ackerson had two sons and were said to be involved in a heated custody dispute.

Singer Julie McKnight told WCTI that she's known Hayes, also a singer, for more than a decade.

“I saw him performing and he asked if somebody knew this song he was singing and I got up and started singing with him and that was it,” she said. “Yeah, he turned into my baby brother that night.”

McKnight said she was even present for the birth of Hayes' and Ackerson's first child. She said that she considers all of his children as her nieces and nephews and is most concerned about their well-being.

McKnight also noted that Hayes and Ackerson fought like normal couples do and did not agree that her friend was the sole cause of the problems in the couple's relationship.

“There was a level of manipulation on both sides and I mean, that just was the case,” said McKnight. “But it wasn't this and, monsters? No.”
