During the March 24, 2014 broadcast of NBC's The Voice, Bria Kelly, the veteran of America's Got Talent from Season 7, survived the first battle round.

Kelly's coach, Usher, chose as her opponent the former NFL cheerleader Tess Boyer. The two of them were mentored, along with Usher, by Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter Jill Scott. For their duet, they were given "Piece Of My Heart" by Janice Joplin.

Most of the emphasis was placed on Boyer, who both Usher and Scott clearly indicated was handicapped compared to Kelly. Scott herself referred to Kelly as "a rocket."

Kelly's only criticsm was that she needed to "control her pitch" on a final note after she ended with her trademark soulful flare.

During the performance itself, Boyer predominantly commanded the stage, with Kelly appearing to have been forced to take a secondary role lest she come across as a stage hog.

This ultimately did not hurt Kelly. She was chosen as the winner of her respective battle round for her ability to connect more to the song. The contest was declared close, however, and Kelly's opponent was ultimately stolen and will now compete for Team Blake.

Kelly, along with the five other winners from Team Usher's battle rounds and the two artists saved by Usher's steals, will advance to the final knockout round, the four victors of which will perform live.
