Brewster Inn chefs win 1st annual Iron Fork Syracuse

NewsChannel9 TV news anchor Carrie Lazarus, Post Standard food editor Don Cazentre, and celebrity chef Anne Burrell combined their tastebuds to select the best of Syracuse's professional chef teams on Sunday afternoon at the 1st annual Iron Fork Syracuse competition. Twelve teams representing 11 central New York restaurants competed in five hours of Iron Chef-style timed cook-offs to determine which restaurant could have bragging rights for the next year. Proceeds raised from the competition benefit the Syracuse Rescue Mission.

Burrell and Lazarus both tweeted updates from the judges' table in the Goldstein Auditorium at SU's Schine Student Center throughout the cook-off. Carrie Lazarus broke the results first on Twitter:

The twelve teams of three chefs each had 50 minutes to create an appetizer, an entree and one additional dish of their choice from fennel, the Iron Fork Syracuse secret ingredient. Brewster Inn chefs Jason Wright, Stephen Franks and David France earned the highest scores, Iron Fork championship chef coats, and their names on the Iron Fork Syracuse trophy that will stay at the Brewster Inn until next year's competition.

In an interview on Sunday with Newschannel9, Burrell praised the abundance of central New York and the skills of the local chefs. The Cazenovia native, whose Food Network shows include Secrets of a Restaurant Chef and Worst Cooks in America, raved about the local produce and dairy products available to central New York chefs and home cooks.

Central New York readers can catch Burrell's Food Network shows on Time Warner Cable channel 46. Season three of Worst Cooks in America premieres on Sunday, February 12 at 9 p.m. ET. Keep an eye on the Iron Fork Syracuse Facebook page for announcements about the 2013 Iron Fork Syracuse competition.
