Brewers make hits count, down Reds 7-2

The Reds and the Brewers both tallied seven hits last night, yet the Brewers managed seven runs, while the Redlegs only managed two.  Timely hitting and two Reds' errors (one each by both shortstops - Janish and Renteria) led to the Brewers victory.  Here are some news and notes from the game:

  • Named National League Player of the Week before the game, Jay Bruce continued his hot hitting.  His RBI single in the 1st inning gave the Reds a 1-0 lead - their last lead of the game.
  • Of the Reds' seven hits, only one went for extra bases - Drew Stubbs' double in the 1st inning.  He later scored on Bruce's single.
  • It was a forgettable debut for Reds' pitcher Chad Reineke, although his 5 walks made it feel as if he had been with the Reds all year (oddly enough, only one of the walks eventually scored).  He gave up 5 runs on 5 hits, including two home runs.  Reineke was charged with the loss.
  • The Reds' best threat was in the bottom of the 4th inning when they had bases loaded and no one out.  Reineke promptly grounded into a double play allowing Jonny Gomes to score from third.  Stubbs was then called out on strikes and the threat was over.
  • The "unleadoff-like" stat of the day: With 3 strikeouts last night, Drew Stubbs now has 70 strikeouts on the season, which leads all of Major League Baseball.  He has one more strikeout than Adam Dunn.  'Nuff said.
  • More from Elias on Jay Bruce and the best player the Reds ever traded away: Bruce finished the month of May with a .342 batting average, 12 home runs and 33 runs batted in. Only one player in Reds history batted .340 or better with at least 12 homers and 33 RBI in a calendar month: Frank Robinson in July 1961 (.409 BA, 13 HR, 34 RBI).

The series against the Brewers concludes tonight at Great American Ball Park; first pitch is 7:10 p.m.  Mike Leake (4-2, 5.10) gets his second start since returning from the minors.  He will face off against the Brewers' Shaun Marcum (6-2, 2.80).
