Brett Hogan leads UTSA to seventh at Lone Star opening round

Brett Hogan is in the top 20 and the UTSA men's golf team is tied for seventh after 36 holes of the Lone Star Invitational held Monday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/7,247 yards).

Hogan, a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, opened the 54-hole event with a two-under-par 70, his lowest round since firing back-to-back 67s at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate last September. His round included three birdies against just one bogey. Hogan came back in the afternoon with a 74 on the strength of four birdies and his 144 puts him in an eight-way tie for 19th.

The Roadrunners posted an even-par 288 in the first round, as Bryce Alley joined Hogan under par with a 71. Ryan Werre was close behind with a 73 and Garrison Lackey contributed a 74.

UTSA registered a 295 in the afternoon on the strength of a 72 from Werre, 74s from Alley and Hogan and a 75 by J.J. Lindsey.

The Birds are in a tie with Conference USA foes Louisiana Tech and North Texas and former Southland opponent Central Arkansas for seventh at seven-over 583, two shots back of Sacramento State. No. 20 New Mexico leads the 15-team field at 13-under 563 (281-282), followed by No. 38 Purdue (572), No. 25 Baylor (573), Southeastern Louisiana (573) and Rice (575).

In the player standings, Alley and Werre are tied for 27th, Lindsey is 57th and Lackey is tied for 68th. Reed Stegall and Kyle Francis are tied for 57th (75-75—150) and 68th (76-76—152), respectively.

Victor Perez of New Mexico and Travis Wilmore of Louisiana Tech are tied for the lead at seven-under 137.
