Here we go again. Just when you think that Brett Favre is finally done, his name comes up again. With the injury to Jay Cutler, Caleb Haine took the reigns as the Bears starting quarterback. But, his ineffectiveness the last two weeks may have the Bears thinking that it is time for a change.
It has been rumored that Favre would be interested in playing for the Bears if they contacted him. The 20 year veteran, now 42 years old, has retired and unretired twice already. His final game was in 2010 with the Vikings in a playoff loss to the Saints. He holds 10 NFL records including most wins by a starting QB, most passing yards and most touchdown passes. He is also an eleven time Pro Bowler, three time MVP and won Superbowl XXXI with the Packers.
While it is very unlikely that Favre would come out of retirement a third time, the idea of him in a Bears' uniform is not completely unrealistic. The Bears are in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. While they still hold the #5 seed in the NFC, they are 7-5, tied with the Falcons (#6) and Lions (#7). But the good news is that the Bears have a better conference record than the Lions and have already beaten the Falcons. However, with Matt Forte out 2-6 weeks with a knee injury, the Bears are in a downward spiral.
Although Donovan McNabb, a Chicago native, is also available, Favre would make better sense than McNabb. Whatever the Bears do, they must do it quickly. Their next game is in Denver this Sunday night before returning home next week in what will be their final home game of the regular season. Then they end their season on the road in Green Bay on Christmas and Minnesota on New Year's Day. Hmmm, Favre playing against his two former teams. Interesting.
