Houston-based photographer (and animal lover) Brett Chisholm has an impeccable reputation as a commercial photographer, but he also does a brilliant job as a pet photographer. Euri, the Houston Dogs Examiner’s English Cocker Spaniel, had the chance to receive the star treatment with a photo session by Chisholm, and even though this was Euri’s first professional shoot, Chisholm made Euri feel extremely comfortable.
In fact, meeting clients beforehand is one of Chisholm’s secrets to success. “I think taking that extra step makes all the difference in the world. Pets and people are both more comfortable in front of my lens, and that is of the utmost importance when taking a photo.” Chisholm believes it is essential to not only meet with the owner prior to the shoot, but the pet as well so they can form a bond.
According to Chisholm, the best success with pets is actually at their own home if they are not used to traveling or spending time out of their home.
Animal Lover and Advocate
Chisholm is also a life-long animal lover and even serves on the honorary council for SNAP (Spay and Neuter Assistance Program). “When I moved to my current studio, I wanted to do a Grand Opening party. I chose to support SNAP because they are very close to my heart and every bit of support SNAP receives - large or small - goes directly to helping them end the animal overpopulation crisis in Houston."
Thanks to Chisholm, the “Snapshots” event raised just under $6,000. Since 2006 Chisholm has worked hard to grow that event to be SNAP’s largest event of the year where more than $50,000 is raised. And if that wasn’t enough, Chisholm also donates the photography for all of SNAP’s capital campaigns and press material.
Chisholm is also working with HAPI (Homeless Animal Partnership Initiative) and Friends of BARC (the Bureau for Animal Control and Regulation) to photograph their foster animals. This is a great way to capture the true personalities of the animals available for adoption and help raise awareness to prospective families.
Pet Photos
If you are looking to add your family pet to a family portrait, there is no additional charge. If however, you want your pet to be the main star, Chisholm prefers to spend a few hours with pets so a bond can be created before he captures their essence. Chisholm brings his own equipment to your house so you don’t have to worry about your dog getting stressed in a studio.
Appointments
Chisholm can usually accommodate clients within seven to 10 days if they are flexible; however, if flexibility is not an option, plan on a minimum of two weeks during the week, and four to six weeks during the weekend.
Commercial Clients
Brett Chisholm’s work has appeared in print publications like Real Simple, USA Today, and People Magazine; and some of his clients include Hewlett Packard, Clear Channel, Coca-Cola, CHI, Hotel Icon, Mercedes-Benz, and Elaine Turner.
Spring Pet Photography Special
Chisholm is running a spring 2010 pet photography special from April through June. The cost is just $250, and 20% will go to benefit SNAP. | Promotions |

Frames
Fortunately for Chisholm’s clients, he has a plethora of product options including albums, books, canvas gallery wraps and gorgeous metallic prints. If a client wants an image framed, Chisholm belongs to an exclusive designer-only warehouse that does gallery quality archival framing at a savings that Chisholm passes onto the client directly.
Studio
Chisholm has had his own studio in Houston, TX for six years and shows no signs of slowing down. His studio is located at 1304 Malone St, Houston, TX, 77007 (at Washington and TC Jester, just behind El Tiempo Mexican restaurant).
