We've written briefly about Whisky River, located at 4850 Big Island Dr., Suite 3 in the Plaza in the Markets at Town Center. Whisky River frequently hosts live musical acts and this Wednesday, December 29 Bret Michaels will make an appearance as part of his VH1 Custom Built Tour 2010. Tickets cost $30 and there are some still available online at Whisky River's website.
Michaels has been performing for nearly 25 years and began his career as lead singer for Poison. During his time with the band, they made three multi-platinum records between 1980-1990. Michaels has also put out three solo albums, the most recent of which is Custom Built, which was released in 2010 and hit the top spot on the Billboard Independent Album and Hard Rock Album charts.
Michaels also starred on the VH1 reality show Rock of Love, where he searched for a woman to marry, i.e. like a rock and roll version of the Bachelor. Michaels is currently starring in a new VH1 show called "Bret Michaels: Life as I Know It," which began on October 18 and airs Monday at 10pm on VH1.
All this only months after he suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage and had to undergo surgery to repair damage to his brain. According to Sam Brand of Tonic and Neurosurgeon Dr. Joseph Zabramski, Michaels is "one of those lucky people, the 20 percent or so who have a subarachnoid hemorhage who make a complete recovery..." Fortunately, Michaels has been able to resume all his normal activities, including performing music.
Whisky RIver is primarily a bar/club but it does offer a full menu. Appetizers include the fried shrimp basket, Dirty Mo's Cheesy Sticks, and beer battered onion rings for appetizers. Bar fare entrees are also available like wings, salads, burgers like the First Coast Burger. There is also "Pit Stop Pizza" available like the Buffalo Chicken Pizza with crispy fried Buffalo chicken, celery, bleu cheese, green onions, and provoloone/mozarella blend on top of a base of Frank's Red Hot and ranch dressing sauce.
The Whisky River brand is owned by NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and has another location at the EpiCentre in downtown Charlotte, NC. The place is gigantic, with high vaulted ceilings, which give it a bit of a warehouse-like big club feel. It has a country-western theme--complete with mechanical bull--and has some similarities to Mavericks at the Landing...except Whisky River seems much larger.
