Breshell Hurley has taken her first steps of the year toward the Miss America pageant.
Hurley was crowned Miss South Texas 2012 on Saturday night, pageant officials announced Sunday night.
Hurley is a pageant veteran. Last year, she served as Miss White Settlement's Outstanding Teen 2011 and participated in the Miss Texas' Outstanding Teen pageant. (See her video on the left side of this page.)
The Miss South Texas pageant is one of the first held in Texas this year to select contestants for the state pageant.
The winner of the Miss Texas 2012 crown will go on to Las Vegas next January to compete for the Miss America 2013 honor.
Hurley is an advocate for gluten sensitivity awareness, saying "18 million Americans have a gluten sensitivity: that's 1 in 17."
She hosts a website about gluten sensitivity which includes the story of her own struggle with the condition, recipes, health tips and ideas on how to help others become aware of the condition.
She also appeared in Life: A Documentary, a movie filmed in Dallas and released by Good Luck Pictures.
