A Brentwood man was arrested and set to face a judge Sunday after he allegedly fatally struck a pedestrian with his car and fled the scene, Suffolk County police said.

Fredy Pavon, 47, of Brentwood, was arraigned Dec. 8 and ordered held on $250,000 cash bail or $500,000 bond after being charged with leaving the scene of an incident involving a fatality without reporting.

Police said Pavon was behind the wheel of a 2007 Toyota Corolla around 10 p.m. on Saturday, when he struck a man walking across Islip Avenue in Brentwood. He allegedly fled the scene, leaving the victim for dead in the roadway.

The 31-year-old victim, Santos Amaya, of Brentwood, was rushed to Southside Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries, authorities said.

Pavon remained in custody Sunday night and is due to appear back in court on Friday.

Police are still investigating and ask anyone with information to call Vehicular Crimes Unit detectives at 631-852-6555. Police also accept tips anonymously through the Suffolk County Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-220-TIPS.
