Breezy and very mild with showers developing, thunder with heavy rain/wind late (Video)

A slow moving warm front will lift north of the region today with low clouds and fog gradually giving way to breezy conditions and milder temperatures. A strong cold front will then approach this evening and move through during the night, bringing a round of heavy rain and strong winds, and perhaps a thunderstorm. Some localized flooding is possible. Colder and breezy conditions will return for Thursday and Friday with lake effect snow in western areas possibly reaching into the Capital Region with some flurries and snow showers.

  • A Flood Watch is in effect for the entire region from 3 p.m. this afternoon through Thursday afternoon. A cold front will bring 1 to 2 inches of rainfall (locally up to 3 inches) to the region and the combination of warm temperatures, snow/ice melt, and a frozen ground may lead to localized small stream flooding, mud slides, ice jams, and basement flooding, and poor drainage/urban area flooding. The best chance for flooding looks to be tonight into Thursday.
  • A High Wind Watch is in effect for the entire region from 3 p.m. this afternoon through Thursday afternoon. Strong and possibly damaging winds will be possible late today into this evening associated with downpours ahead of a cold front. Strong southerly winds, becoming west after the frontal passage, at 20 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph, especially over the higher terrain, may bring down trees and limbs and cause power outages.
