The American Wirehair cat became a registered breed with the Cat Fancier’s Association in 1967. Many Milwaukeeans are familiar with the breed. Hybrid cats can be identified by chocolate, lavender, color point patterns or a combination of these non-acceptable standards.
They have a thick coat that should be picked during shedding season otherwise these cats just need a good shampoo and a towel drying. Each hair is hooked to form this rough coat. Their whiskers are bent as well.
This medium sized, stocky cat has been bred from the American Shorthair. In 1966 in upstate New York, a barn cat’s litter was found to have this hooked coat mutation in some of the kittens. These kittens were bred with the American Shorthair resulting in this unique breed found nowhere other than the United States. The following year the breed became registered in The Cat Fancier’s Association.
They make good family pets and love to be with people. They are easily occupied with a clump of dust or shoestring. Milwaukee residens can contact the Cat Doctor about this breed.
