Breastfeeding overdose: Stephanie Greene gets 20 years for killing her baby

Stephanie Greene, 39, was sentenced to 20 years in prison on Friday for killing her 6-week-old daughter. Prosecutors assert that the South Carolina woman gave her baby a morphine overdose via her breast milk, according to a Washington Post report on Friday.

Prosecutors also said that Greene knew the dangers of taking painkillers while she was pregnant and breastfeeding – as she was a nurse. It has also been said that the woman concealed her pregnancy from physicians so that she could continue receiving prescriptions for the drugs. A decade ago, Greene lost her nursing license for having tried to get drugs in an illegal manner.

Greene’s attorney claimed that the woman was only trying to stop her agony of pain from a car accident that occurred more than ten years ago. Greene trusted her own judgment and her own research via the Internet as opposed to doctors’ advice regarding the deadly mishap.

In Spartanburg County, the guilty charge was homicide by child abuse and the minimum sentence of 20 years was assigned. She will have to serve 16 years before becoming eligible for parole. Greene’s sentence could have been life in prison.

It is the first time a person has been prosecuted in the United States for killing her own child through a substance transmitted via breast milk. The case will be appealed – and most likely tied up in the courts for years.
