Breastfeeding doll gets worldwide attention

Little girls have played with baby dolls for years, mimicking how their own mothers have parented them. Dolls have been used for snuggling, comfort and even play therapy. So how can it be that a new doll on the market is causing so much commotion?

Dolls in the past have been animatronic, able to consume baby food and even needed a diaper change when all was said and done.  It is no surprise to find a doll that mirrors yet another basic function babies are known for, breastfeeding.

Spanish toy maker, Berjuan Toys, brings us The Breast Milk Baby. The manufacturer’s website states,“the doll lets young girls express their love and affection in the most natural way possible, by simulating natural nursing. “

The Breast Milk Baby comes with a halter-top with two flowers on the chest.  When the doll is held close to the flowers, it makes a suckling sound while the motorized mouth moves, stimulating breastfeeding. Both African American and Caucasian versions are available for purchase.

Dennis Lewis, U.S. spokesman for Berjuan Toys stated, “the whole purpose of The Breast Milk Baby is to teach children the nurturing skills they’ll need to raise their own healthy babies in the future. Breastfeeding is good for babies, it’s good for mommies and it’s good for society. We really don’t understand why this has created such controversy.”

Though not available in EL Paso toy stores, The Breast Milk Baby has been available since 2009, via their online website.

New marketing tactics have recently included a commercial on the company's website and YouTube. In the commercial you can see a mother breastfeeding a real baby, which is now causing outrage from some and support from others. News reports from all over the world are popping up on large news channels such as Fox News and ABC.

With all the media attention and comments rolling in, we are interested to know what our readers think. Please leave your own comments and tell us, is The Breast Milk Baby something you would buy your daughter?
