Breastfeeding class taught at Spectrum Health Hospital

You might think breastfeeding is something you would know how to do naturally, and wouldn't require having to go to school to become skilled in it. And after all, if cave women did it, breastfeeding your baby should be something you would be able to handle as well.

Unfortunately, many new mothers leave the hospital after giving birth to their first baby, with the full intention of raising their baby on breast milk, only to find out their baby is not suckling properly, and quite possibly, under-feeding them.

Breastfeeding provides many benefits – for both mother and child. Breast milk is easy to digest and contains antibodies that can protect infants from bacterial and viral infections. And for mom, research indicates that women who breastfeed may have lower rates of certain breast and ovarian cancers.

Spectrum Health Hospital, in Grand Rapids, offers breastfeeding classes each month. Detailed breastfeeding information is covered in their class taught by a certified lactation counselor/consultant. They cover topics such as latch-on and positioning techniques, assessing your baby's eating, and practical tips to prepare for successful breastfeeding.

They ask that you bring a baby-sized doll or a stuffed animal with you, and your partner is strongly encouraged to attend as well. The cost is $25. Spectrum Health directly bills all insurance companies for this class. Your insurance company may or may not cover the cost.

Classes are held at 665 Seward Avenue NW, Suite 110, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Free on-site parking is available. For registration – please call 1-616-267-2626 to reserve your spot.

Great idea to take a class so you are not overwhelmed when the baby is born.

This is a great idea. Not all babies take to a Mother's breast with ease. This will help also with how long, best positions for the child, when to burp them, etc....
