Congratulations to the Vermont airport, the Burlington International, for working with Mamava and installing a breastfeeding friendly pod! Finally, another safe, sanitary and private area for traveling moms to breastfeed or pump while in “public”.
In 2006 a woman, Emily Gillette, on a delayed flight, who was seated in a window seat next to her husband was breastfeeding her child and was told by the flight attendant to cover up because she was making everyone on the flight uncomfortable. When she refused, she and her husband were escorted off the flight. Nursing in public is protected by the Vermont Law, Act 117 which states “Mothers have a civil right to breastfeed in places of public accommodation (schools, restaurants, stores and other facilities serving the general public)”. In Ohio Breastfeeding in public is also protected by the Ohio Rev. Code Ann. § 3781.55 (2005) which “provides that a mother is entitled to breastfeed her baby in any location of a place of public accommodation wherein the mother is otherwise permitted. (SB 41)”
Vermont isn’t the first airport to install or define a specific area for breastfeeding and pumping breast milk. The list of airports with breastfeeding friendly areas include:
- Albany International Airport – New York
- Billings Logan International Airport, Montana
- Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
- Indianapolis Airport
- Seattle Sea-Tac (Seatac) Airport
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
Do some research beforehand to insure your airport is nursing mom/baby friendly. When you’re a hardworking mom, whether stay-at-home or working outside the home, you should be able to nurse or pump for your child. Breastfeeding 100% recommended by all doctors and pediatricians because of its health benefits; higher immune system in the baby, perfect and balanced nutrition, fights diseases like obesity and asthma. You should be able to breastfeed in public and not feel ashamed, bullied or forced to leave the area (Like the degrading suggestion to breast feed in the bathroom. What adult do you know eats while sitting in the bathroom? Why would you ask a baby to?). Take advantage of all the family friendly areas in airports and travel safe and happy! The holidays are coming after all!
*** An update as of October 12th, 2013; A small airport outside of Jacksonville NC called Ellis Airport has a nursery room for families. Perfect for nursing in total privacy. Great to see smaller, public facilities are family friendly.
