It should come as no surprise to anyone who follows UConn women's basketball that today Breanna Stewart has been named the American Athletic Conference's Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 9. Stewie, a 6-4 forward, averaged 22.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game for the week. After leading the No. 1 Huskies to a 102-41 win over SMU with 20 points and eight rebounds on Tuesday, the super-soph added a double-double 24-point, 10- rebound effort on Sunday to lead Connecticut past last year's Big East champion and national championship game finalist Louisville, 81-64, snapping a 16-game winning streak by the Cardinals, who were ranked No. 4 going into the game. In the Louisville game, the Syracuse native shot 45 percent from the field (9-for-20) including 4-of-8 from beyond the three-point arc. She also had added assists and two blocked shots to her bottom line vs. the Cardinals.
For the season, Stewart, The American's Preseason Player of the Year, has averaged 19.4 points and 8.0 boards per game. She is second in the conference in scoring, and is second on the Huskies in rebounding.
Next up for the Huskies (25-0 overall; 12-0 in The American) will be a trip to Tampa where they will take on the University of South Florida Bulls (13-10, 8-4) on Sunday. Tip-off is at 4 p.m., and the game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network. It can also be heard throughout the state on the UConn IMG radio network.
