WGAL is temporary off air after the roof partially collapsed earlier this afternoon. The collapse, according to WGAL’s website, occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. and they were evacuated about a half hour later. No one was injured. The television station is continuing updates using Twitter and Facebook. Emergency responders are on the scene.
Ironically WGAL reported several times this week on area homes and businesses, including a pig farm, that sustained roof collapses.
The weight of the snow and the ice combined add an intense pressure on your roof. Just two feet of snow is essentially 19 tons.
So how do you remove the snow?
Home Depot, on Fruitville Pike in the Red Rose Plaza, sells roof rakes. A True Temper 17 foot roof rake, for example, is durable and is great removing snow from roof tops. The aluminum handle extends to 17 feet for easier access. There is a non slip handle for better control. It runs $39.46, according to Home Depot’s site, and is currently in stock. This is just one example. Home Depot does have several brands.
How can you prevent this nightmare from happening to you?
Get the snow off the roof as soon as you can and before any damage occurs. Remember your gutters too. As the snow melts, it will flow naturally to your gutters. However when we have refreeze issues as we have here locally almost nightly, the gutters get ice blocked. The water still needs to run off somewhere so now it finds crevices under the shingles and eventually leaks into your house or business.
