Breaking News: Obama Orders Sanctions on Russia

President Obama stepped up to the plate today and ordered an executive order imposing sanctions on Russia, limiting alien immigrations, prohibiting donations supporting the Russian cause and declaring a national emergency to deal with the threat.

“I (Obama) hereby declare a national emergency to deal with that threat,” reads the Executive Order.

The Executive Order does not actually mention Russia, although it is strongly implied and perhaps obvious. The EO speaks of “the actions and policies of persons -- including persons who have asserted governmental authority in the Crimean region without the authorization of the Government of Ukraine -- that undermine democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine…”

The Kyiv Post however today is quoting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov who said Secretary of State John Kerry has “assured him” that such lists of Russian officials do not exist, calling the sanctions “threats”.

The sanctions will prevent US companies from doing business with Russian individuals who are undermining the Ukrainian government. The EO also limits travel and prohibits donations. Visas have been blocked for above implied individuals and assests are to be frozen.

The US is the first country to impose sanctions.

This EO came the day after former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton compared Russian President Vladimir Putin to Germany’s Adolf Hitler. Specifically, she compared – as many others have as well – Putin’s takeover tactics in Crimea to those of Hitler prior to and during the Second World War. Poland and other foreign Soviet countries bordering Russia have pushed for a stronger and more united response from the European Union countries.
