On the eve of the Grammy's, the entertainment world suffered a tragic loss, as music legend Whitney Houston, originally of Newark, New Jersey, has passed away at the age of 48.
PEOPLE reports that her publicist, Kristen Foster confirmed Houston's passing Saturday just hours before the singer was to perform at Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy party at the Beverly Hilton, where her body was found.
Hilton Hotel. We received a call at 3:43 p.m. from hotel security and Beverly Hills Fire and police responded minutes later," Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen tells PEOPLE. "It's unclear who notified hotel staff because she has quite an entourage here at the hotel. We attempted to resuscitate her, to no avail."
Just two days ago, Houston performed at a pre-Grammy party with singer Kelly Price, and appeared to be of sound health and in good spirits.
Whitney Houston was a powerful force, not only in R&B, but in music altogether. She is known for her tremendous and powerful multi-octave range and her incredible ballads in the 1980s and 90s. In more recent years, the powerhouse was in the spotlight for her volatile marriage to R&B singer Bobby Brown, as well as her struggle with drug and alcohol abuse. Today, she is remembered for being an idol to all singers and for leaving behind a legacy that no one will forget.
Sarah T., a Newark resident says, "It's just so sad. Whitney was still so young and was turning her life around. She could have done so many more great things. It hits home because she was just a girl from Newark and made it big. She's such an inspiration."
My thoughts and prayers go out to Houston's family during this tragic time.
Story still developing.
