Nancy Pelosi and Steny Hoyer met this morning with John Boehner and Eric Cantor. It is believed that they were repotedly discussing a short term extension of the debt ceiling for about six weeks. This may or may not also involve opening the government back up, which has been a Democratic Party demand for any negotiations.
In my estimation, a short term deal only ecourages more ransom demands in about six weeks. It also only temporarily ends the debt ceiling crisis until right around Christmas, when Republicans will engage in this intentional destruction of democracy again because it works. Democrats are like Charley Brown every time Lucy encourages him to kick the footbal only to have her pull it away when it comes to not caving in to Right Wing ransom demands.
I am firmly convinced this whole charade gives us one of two options no matter when the final show down comes. Option one as I explained the other day is Democrats capitulate on Social Security and give the Repubulicans more deficit reductions by cutting benefits to Seniors by a phony scam called the chained CPI. This fruadulent piece of political chicanery is intended to give Democrats cover when they allow Republicans to cut a Democratic Party pillar since the Great Depression, because everyone will pretend this is an adjustment not a cut.
This has been floated in recent days on many news sources, because everyone insists there must be negotiations which in reality will amount to little more than Dems cave in because they get nothing back from Republicans, except some small amount of breathing room till Republicans do this again with an even grander set of demands. The other choice is defaulting on our debt.
Chained CPI is the scam whereby we reduce benefits because when prices rise people buy cheaper cuts of meat or whatever. This is cost of living in reverse where because the necessity of eating and buying life saving medicines by senoirs causes them to reduce what they buy, such as going from beef to chicken, we should adjust their benefits down. It is a cut in benefits no matter how you try to camoflage it. Senoirs should do with less so millionaires can get more is where this is all going.
It is also likely that Democrats will not come away with any real revenue sources though both sides will pretend that closing a few loop holes gives the Dems the tax increases they have demanded. In short this would be just one more Democratic Party capitulation despite the fact that they will say they had to do it to save the country from defaulting on our debt.
My only question is what will they give up the next time Republicans take America hostage because they will, if Dems give an inch and give them anything. There should never be any negotiating with Republicans as the result of usurping democracy because they didn't get thier way.
It is abolutely outrageous to expect the most vulnarable in our society to pay for schemes that enable the wealthiest among us to get richer. Unless Dems want to keep facing hostage crisies it is past time to just say no.
