Breaking: LG pushes Apple to 3rd place in U.S. phone market

According to a January 20 report in Yonhap, Apple slides to 3rd place in the U.S phone market as LG Electronics regains 2nd position. LG had been in 3rd position for one year.

Counterpoint Research in Hong Kong said Sunday, January 20, that LG Electronics won a 13 percent market share in the U.S on strong sales of its new smartphones in December. Especially popular is the Optimus G, with more than 1 milllion sold in North America.

An spokesman from LG Electronics said: “Optumus G and our other latest smartphones gained popularity in the North American market”.

Apple is now in 3rd place with 12 percent of the U.S handset market. Samsung keeps the 1st position with 33 percent.

Now that Apple is in 3rd position in the U.S. phone market, will it change its strategy and start producing multiple versions of the iPhone to reach different market segments, like it does with the iPod? What do you think?
