It may not be protests but a lack of preparedness that is the ultimate undoing of the controversial plan to build a 13-story mosque and Islamic cultural center at the site where 3,000 American civilians were murdered in the name of Islam.
The New York Post reports that the Cordoba Initiative, the project's sponsor, owns only half the land designated as a prospective construction site. The other half is owned by New York energy provider Con Edison.
There are currently two adjacent buildings on the
parcel in question. One of the buildings, at 45-47 Park Place, was purchased by Sharif El-Gamal, head of Soho Properties, in 2006 on behalf of the Cordoba Initiative. The purchase price, $4.8 million, was paid in cash. The second, 49-51 Park Place, was never bought, but rather leased from Consolidated Edison for an additional $700,000. The lease lapses in 2071.
According to the Post, Con Ed has affirmed that El-Gamal approached the utility in February, stating his intention to exercise a purchase option written into the $33,000-a-year lease. The utility is now performing an appraisal to determine the value of the property. The purchase price is likely to be between $10 million and $20 million.
Any potential sale of the property, which was once used as a substation, will need to be reviewed by the state Public Service Commission. The fate of the mosque might ultimately be determined by a vote of the five-member board, which is controlled by New York Governor David Paterson. It is also contingent on the Cordoba group raising the funds required to close a deal, should one be approved. So far $200 in donations have come in, according to a spokesperson for Muslims for Peace, the nonprofit accepting contributions on behalf of the mosque project. At that rate it will take another 50,000 years to raise the needed cash.

This is just a small setback. The Muslims will persist until the project goes through. Eventually when the attention of the public is on some other crisis, the project will go through and the "shrine" to terrorists will be built with Saudi money.

It's offensive to suggest that Americans need to be “sensitive” to 9/11 victims when building a mosque. Muslim Americans should not be expected to endlessly apologize for a few crazies out of the billion or so worldwide. Equating the Muslim religion with terrorism is bigotry. Period.

No, not building a mosque does not even start to apply justice to what was done to us, but it does show that we care of those who suffered and died and we support all the suvivors of those men women and children who perished. Just because you found something printed in paper does not make it so. Study, listen and care about what is actually happening to you before you try to spout off. This is America where our freedoms are slowly, one by one, being taken away from us. To have our President support something like this is humilating and embarressing.
people are forgetting that these are americans- that there are several million american muslims concentrated in parts of the country - one being nyc. this is an area where a mosque is needed to serve a growing population that is crowding the mosque that has already existed in that area for 40 years. muslim americans died in 9/11. they were attacked as much as any other american. in fact a musim american in nyc has a stronger emotional connection to the attack than a lot of non-muslims in middle america.
