Gabrielle (Gabby) Giffords, Arizona Congresswoman, was shot Saturday morning in north Tucson, Arizona. Giffords was shot in the head at point-blank range outside a Safeway grocery store where she was hosting a political event for her constituents.
At least 12 people were shot at the Tuscon grocery store by a lone gun man who is now in custody. Reports are conflicting at this time as to the total number of fatalities, sources are reporting multiple fatalities.
Giffords, a Democrat, was re-elected to her third term in November. She was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner" event at the Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
Giffords is the U.S. Representative for Arizona's 8th congressional district. Arizona's 8th Congressional District encompasses the extreme southeastern part of the state. It includes all of Cochise County and parts of Pima, Pinal, and Santa Cruz counties.
Gabrielle Giffords is married to American astronaut Mark Kelly. Kelly is the commander of STS-134 Endeavour, the final planned mission of the American space shuttle program.
