“Nothing is too much trouble if it turns out the way it should.”
~Julia Child, My Life in France
The chocolate filled croissants from Trader Joe’s are certainly not too much trouble and definitely turned out the way they should. My end result was a golden brown, flakey pastry with a rich dark chocolate filling. The additional bonus aside from the amazing taste is having a house that smells like a boulangerie in France while they are baking. The fact that they are purchased in the frozen food section coupled with the simplicity of preparation made me very skeptical of what the final outcome would be. I really wanted these croissants to be a success, not just because I am always up for enjoying a decadent pastry but also for the sole reason that I love a dessert that looks and tastes like it was very time consuming but actually requires very little effort.
Preparation/package instructions:
- Place frozen pastries, seam side down, 4-5 inches apart on a very lightly buttered or parchment lined baking sheet.
- Allow uncovered croissants to sit at room temperature for 9 hours (overnight).
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- If a shinier finish is desired, beat one egg well with a fork and using a pastry brush; gently glaze the raw croissant with the egg wash prior to baking. (My croissants were prepared this way)
- Bake 20-25 minutes or until crisp and quite brown. Lightly golden croissants will not be thoroughly baked.
- Cool about 10 minutes before serving.
Yield: 4 croissants per package
