When it's time for breakfast, always ask the locals where they like to go. Then you will avoid the chain restaurants, any mediocre hotel restaurants and, if you are lucky, end up chatting with locals who are usually happy to advise you on what to see and do in Santa Fe. Here are some great ideas for a local-recommended breakfast:
The Pantry - There's a little place on Cerrillos Road where the vibe is warm and the breakfast appeals to locals and visitors alike. Whether you want a New Mexican breakfast or typical American eggs and pancakes, you'll enjoy your meal at The Pantry. A specialty is their Durango Omelette made with ham, cheese, sour cream, green onions, and mushrooms topped with green chile. You can enjoy a breakfast burrito, French toast or a breakfast steak. The service is efficient and there usually is a line. Address: 1820 Cerrillos Rd., Santa Fe, NM 87505
Tecolote Cafe - Also on Cerrillos Road, you'll find another small restaurant known for breakfast, Tecolote (owl in Spanish). You'll find breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros and American favorites. They have some great New Mexican specialties. Address: 1203 Cerrillos Road. You'll probably find a line here too.
Tune Up Cafe - Tune Up features fresh, local and healthy breakfasts. You'll find more organic fare here than at other local restaurants. It's a small, friendly place where you place your order at the kitchen and choose your own seat. Very innovative, fresh cuisine. Address: 1115 Hickox St. Santa Fe, NM 87505
New Plaza Cafe - After being closed awhile due to a kitchen fire, then used as a movie set for Odd Thomas, the New Plaza Cafe on Lincoln Avenue is open and serving a throng of locals and visitors.
The Santa Fe Travelers wrote about the new restaurant in their article, 7 Great Santa Fe restaurants to start your day. It's a great place to experience some typical New Mexican cuisine. But, it always seems crowded and you will run into fellow tourists there! They are open Monday-Sunday 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Located right on the historic Plaza.
