Inspired by a recent cocktail cookbook find - The Jelly Shot Test Kitchen - I decided to devise my own recipes, based on my beloved breakfast-themed shots. For my first attempt, I chose to adapt one of the Test Kitchen’s own recipes, the Blood Orange Screwdriver Jelly shot. After an initial attempt that failed miserably (a result of the addition of too much alcohol), I was able to create an edible (and tasty!) jiggly gelatinous cube with a sweet and citrus-y, smoky, bacon-y Screwdriver flavor.
Bakon Screwdriver Jelly shot
- 1 1/2 cups Orange Juice
- 2 Envelopes Knox Gelatin
- 1/4 cup Vodka
- 1/4 cup Bakon Vodka
- Cointreau (or similar liquor) to taste
Pour orange juice into a sauce pan and sprinkle gelatin on top; allow gelatin to soak for 1 -2 minutes. Heat over low heat until gelatin has dissolved, approximately 5 minutes. Remove from heat and add alcohol. Tentatively add a few splashes of Cointreau (or similar orange liquor); taste and adjust as necessary. Pour into a lightly greased (nonreactive metal or glass) pan or silicon mold(s) and let set in the refrigerator. These shots are stupendous with a bacon “chaser.” Enjoy!
A word of caution: a small amount of orange liquor can go a long way. I used Gran Gala in lieu of Cointreau (because it’s considerably less expensive) and ruined my first batch by adding too much (it has a really potent orange brandy flavor).

*You can purchase 32-packs of Knox gelatin locally at Rainbow for around 10 bucks; since each recipe typically only uses 1 or 2 packets, a bulk box is affordable and will last through several recipe creations.
