Breakfast Casserole Recipe
Ingredients for Breakfast Casserole Recipe:
- 1 ½ pounds bulk sausage
- 6 – 8 slices of bread, cubed (you can leave the crusts on)
- ¾ cup cheese, shredded
- 6 eggs
- 2 ½ cups milk
- 1 tsp. dry mustard
- 1 tsp. salt
- ½ tsp. pepper
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- Dash of nutmeg
Directions for making Breakfast Casserole Recipe:
In a large skillet, brown the bulk sausage, breaking up the pieces so it is crumbly. Drain it well.
In a buttered 9x13 baking pan, layer the browned sausage, top it with the bread cubes. Sprinkle the cubes with the shredded cheese.
Using a whisk, whip together the eggs, milk, dry mustard, salt, pepper, garlic powder and nutmeg. Pour the egg mixture over the sausage, bread, and cheese layers. Push down on the bread so that the egg mixture is well-soaked into the bread. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 1 hour at 325 degrees. Remove from oven and let sit for at least 15 minutes prior to serving. Cut into squares and serve.
IDEAS FOR VARIATIONS:
Sausage: There are so many to choose from – Sweet Italian, Spicy Italian, or vegetarian sausage. You can cook apples or onions with the sausage when browning it. Try cooking chopped or julienned bell peppers with the sausage.
Bread: Use rosemary focaccia, garlic bread, sour dough, or cheese bread. The bread will add a distinct flavor and texture, so change up the flavor each time you make it. A crusty Italian loaf works very well.
Cheese: The original recipe called for cheddar cheese. Try using cheddar mixed with Swiss or Monterrey Jack or any other type of cheese you have on hand. You can layer cheese in the recipe twice. Put a layer right over the cooked sausage, then put another layer over the bread. The cheese adds a great flavor.
Seasonings: As with any recipe, you will want to use your favorite seasonings to liven it up and make it your own.
