Some of my longtime readers may remember an article I wrote last year entitled “Break Bread with the Knights”. It was about a local Knights of Columbus chapter based out of southwest suburban Cook County. Specifically, it concerned K of C Council #805, (Leo XIII). They were kicking off a big public event to raise their profile with the local community. For those who missed it, you might be wondering what happened. Well, here's up an update over a year later: “Break Bread with the Knights” was a smashing success, and the council is planning another major event this weekend.
For those of you who missed my column (or those aren't familiar with the Knights of Columbus), allow me to bring you up to speed. The Knights of Columbus is one of the biggest Catholic fraternal organizations for men in the world, and the first such organization chartered in the United States. It was founded in 1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGivney of New Haven, Connecticut. Today, it has over 1.6 million members, and around 12,000 councils, in 13 different countries around the world. Past and present members include such prominent people as Richard J. Daley, Jeb Bush, Samuel Alito, “B1” Bob Dornan, John F. Kennedy, Alan Keyes, Manuel Lujan Jr., Joe Manchin, Rick Santorum, Sargent Shriver, Al Smith, Vince Lombardi, Babe Ruth, and Mike Ditka , as well as two time Medal of Honor winner Daniel Daly.
The council discussed in my previous and current article is Council #805. They were designated “Leo XIII” in honor of late Pope Leo XIII, a particularly well known and beloved pontiff who lead the Catholic Church into the 20th century. This particular council has been chartered since 1903, the year Pope Leo XIII passed away. At present, the council serves two parishes: Our Lady of Loretto in Hometown, and nearby St. Bernadette's in Evergreen Park. They also support and sponsor a variety of Catholic events in southwest suburban Cook County. Among the events the Knights were involved with includes:
An Honor Guard for a Bishop at a Confirmation ceremony
A Escort and Gifts for a First Communion ceremony
Sponsorship and Participation in a Memorial Day Mass at a local Catholic Cemetery
Sponsorship and Participation in a Rosary Night
Sponsorship or Participation in various parish festivals
Participation in monthly Eucharistic Adoration
This weekend, the Knights are hosting a special Mass & BBQ event in Tinley Park, Illinois. The event is open to the public and all families are invited to come and celebrate with the Knights. Originally, the afternoon meal was limited only to those who purchased tickets ahead of time. Now, the Knights have opted to let people buy tickets at the door, due to the strong interest. Best of all, the food for the evenings festivities will be catered by Hog Wild Restaurant, and proceeds from the event are being used to help Southside Pregnancy Center in Oak Lawn. Here is some information about the upcoming event, for my readers who want to attend and plan to save the date:
