Braves win first spring game

After seven straight games without a win (six losses, one tie) to begin Spring Training, the Braves won their first game Tuesday in Florida by beating the Nationals, 8-4.

The game got more attention for a return to the mound by Nats' pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who threw two scoreless innings. Strasburg had surgery in October to remove bone chips from his elbow.

Kris Medlen pitched well for the Braves, throwing strikes on 25 of 39 pitches before coming out.

Off the field, Mike Minor and Brandon Beachy have both started throwing off the mound in their attempts to get healthy before the season begins. Beachy only had five starts last year following Tommy John surgery in 2012, and had shoulder surgery in the offseason. Minor has been resting his shoulder a bit before the season gets underway.

The Braves played the Phillies to a 2-2 tie yesterday, and face the Nationals again tonight at 6:05 PM. They are now 1-6-2 in spring training games so far.
