Braves sign 19 players to roster, including Gattis

The Atlanta Braves are not just signing their big-name players to contracts. Today, the Braves announced that nineteen players have been signed to one-year contracts with the club.

The most prominent of these names is C Evan Gattis, who will be moving behind the plate to replace the departed Brian McCann. Gattis was a fan favorite last season, and hit 21 home runs while driving in 65 runs in 105 games last year. Now, he is expected to get the bulk of time behind the plate - last year he split time between catcher, 1B, and the outfield.

He will also be expected, quite possibly, to bat cleanup in the Braves' lineup.

The other players signed who are reporting to the Braves' spring training camp, in addition to Gattis, are:

  • RHP David Carpenter, Cory Gearrin, David Hale, Juan Jaime, Aaron Northcraft, Wirfin Obispo, Anthony Varvaro
  • LHP Luis Avilan, Ryan Buchter, Carlos Perez and Alex Wood
  • 1B Ernesto Mejia
  • 2B Tyler Pastornicky
  • SS Elmer Reyes
  • OF Jose Constanza, Todd Cunningham and Joey Terdoslavich
  • C Christian Bethancourt

Financial terms of all the deals were not disclosed.
