An 11-year-old child risked his own life to run out into a busy street in Itajai, Brazil earlier this week to save his dog. The little terrier mix had somehow escaped from his yard, and as the child Jean Fernandes watched, a driver hit his dog without even stopping, according to Brazilian news media Guarda-Sol.
Young Jean rushed out to help his dog lying injured in the middle of the road. When interviewed Jean stated:
"He managed to escape through the gate and I ran after him. By the time I saw him hit he was in the middle of the street. I took him in my arms and brought him home." (translated by Bing)
Jean's mother, Rubia Liliana Rose, said all three of her children have been taught to respect people and animals, but Jean might have the biggest heart for pet rescue in the family.
Photographer Rafaela Martins captured the heartwarming sequence of a boy and his dog. More photos can be viewed on the Guardo-Sol link by clicking here.
Obviously heroes come in all sizes and all ages; Jean Fernandes is definitely a hero.
The Brazilian Rights Facebook page picked up Jean's story, and has attracted international attention. One particular post rings true of this young man by stating:
"Anou York if we all could be just a little more like this brave young man our world would be so much more beautiful! Thank you for your kindness."
According to the Huffington Post, little Mel (translated to Honey) is still limping, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Are there no sweeter stories than dogs and their children?
