Bradenton's Ron Smith, Bruce Combs prominent in Florida state seniors tourney

Ron Smith of Bradenton holds positions among the top six in five events and Bruce Combs, also of Bradenton, is the pacesetter in his singles age division after the first two of five weekends in the 45th annual Florida State Senior Handicap Championship Tournament in Spring Hill.

Smith, competing in the 65-69 age category, is currently fourth in singles with a handicap score of 734, and he is the runner-up in six-game all-events with 1,441 and tied for sixth in nine-game handicap all-events with 2,138, according to tournament standings posted Wednesday.

In addition, Smith teamed with Clyde McCleary for the third position in doubles with 1,437, and he is a member of the first-place team -- Mike Sherman Pest Control, also including McCleary, Mike Sherman and Manuel Garcia -- that has a score of 2,857.

Bruce Combs heads the leaderboard in six-game all-events in the 60-64 age group with a score of 1,486, and he holds down the No. 4 spot in singles with 736.

Richard Wight of Sarasota is prominent in three events: third in 55-59 six-game all-events (1,493), fifth in 55-59 singles (743), and tied for sixth in nine-game handicap all-events (2,138).

The only other Sarasota-Manatee area entrant to be listed in the current Top 10 in two events is Sandy Combs of Bradenton, runner-up in 50-54 six-game all-events (1,415) and tenth in 50-54 singles (688).
