A few days ago, Hip-Hop blog site Rap Radar.com posted the track list for Lil Wayne's upcoming Tha Carter IV album. The interest must have been there, since the track list (and the attached 'net premier for Wayne's new single "She Will") prompted 120 comments from Rap Radar users (the average number of comments is around 35). Simply put, despite the delays (Weezy's prison stay), pushbacks, and rumors, come August 29th, Tha Carter IV will drop...and make some serious noise.
And sell a ton of units.
Let's face it. Wayne may be the biggest Pop star in the country. His last full length album, Tha Carter III, sold one million copies in a week. That's Taylor Swift, Gaga, and Adele company. The album ultimately sold 2.88 million copies. If there's anybody who still doubts Wayne's big dog status, who else could do an eight month prison bid, get out of prison, and drop a single ("6 Foot 7 Foot") that rocked the internet and the Billboard Hot 100 chart?
As far as singles, if they are an indicator of how well Tha Carter IV could do, Wayne has nothing to worry about. The single "6 Foot 7 Foot" debuted at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and sold 2 million in downloads. And Weezy's current single, "How To Love", is currently sitting at number 6 on the same chart.
Looking at the performance of the singles, the anticipation, and fan awareness, it's not a stretch to say that Tha Carter IV should dominate when it drops. The current hip-hop hit album, Watch The Throne, (Jay-Z and Kanye West's collabo album) has sat atop the charts now for a week (possibly for two, according to a few 'net reports), with first week sales of 436,100 units . Look for Tha Carter IV to debut in the 750,000 to 900,000 range next week. (And to top "...Throne") Not only that, the album should dominate the fall quarter. The only possible challengers on deck are Drake (who's signed to Wayne's label) and Rick Ross. And both of those men could also knock out pop star sales as well.
But, come next week, it's going to look like 2008 all over again.
