BPA exposure from tote bags and store receipts

BPA stands for Bisphenol A found in polycarbonate polymers and epoxy-based enamels and coatings. It's found in :
-certain hard plastic bottles
-metal-based food and beverage cans
-very recent reports (7/2010) have found it in store receipt paper and the paint on tote bags

According to the FDA, BPA approval in conjunction with food contact were approved more than 40 years ago. However, today there exists "hundreds of different formulations" which may cause a need for some regulatory updating. Studies have shown there may be a link between BPA exposure and certain cancers, namely reproductive cancers such as breast cancer.

In an article listed by Health and Human Services (HHS) in 2008, BPA exposure is still considered too minimal to cause reproductive health concerns. They also stated that some of the testing that produced negative results were conducted under "unrealistic conditions." Another concern stated by the FDA was in the inconsistencies with current research where different studies use different experimental designs. But, the article does recognize the need for more research.

Which is a good thing! These reports have prompted citizens to urge more research or find safer materials for producing containers and basically anything that comes in contact with skin. While the HHS may claim that BPA is safe, it will not relieve the fears of most consumers.

Apparently, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has provided $30 million to study BPA.

If you're concerned about BPA exposure, some practical steps may be to:
- Gradually convert to glass baby bottles and leftover dishes. There are some plastic containers and bottles available now that claim to be BPA-free.
-Eat fresh as often as possible reducing the need for canned foods.
-Stainless steel water bottles are also available at most large discount stores.
-When checking out books, don't take your library receipt if you don't need it. (some libraries offer email notifications eliminating the need for receipts)

Not taking your receipt after making a purchase is a problem considering you may need that receipt in the event that you may need to return the product. How retail outlets are going to reduce BPA exposure for their employees is still up for discussion.

It may be possible that some paper used for receipts and other types of paper do not contain BPA. We will probably hear more about this very soon. A wealth of information is currently available through theFDA and HHS.
