Boynton Beach Club is a new musical spotlighting how people today are aging differently than in the past. As the "Baby Boomer" generation hits retirement age and people are living longer and healthier lives, our notions about "old age" are changing. While addressing such poignant aspects as bereavement, Boynton Beach Club provides an upbeat outlook towards the multitude of life-affirming possibilities after age 50, including vibrant friendships, romance and … sex. The musical score evokes the rhythms of the Boomer generation, mixing references to pop, rock and 60's style Latin dance rhythms, along with more traditional Broadway-style showtunes.
Boynton Beach Club began as a 2006 movie directed and
co-written by Susan Seidelman. She developed the movie based on an original story from her mother Florence, who lives in Boynton Beach. The movie was filmed in various locations all around the Boynton Beach and Delray area, incorporating many of the local residents as extras. The cast included a group of veteran movie stars, Dyan Cannon, Brenda Vaccaro, Joe Bologna, Sally Kellerman, Len Cariou and Michael Nouri.
Composer Ned Paul Ginsburg and lyricist Michael Colby saw the BBC movie and felt it should be made into a musical. They contacted the Seidelman women and the decision was made to move forward with the staging of the musical. Over the next two years, Broadway actors were recruited who gave brilliant performances during developmental readings of the show in New York City.
THE BROADWAY CREDITED CAST INCLUDES: Heather MacRae (HAIR, FALSETTOS; award-winning cabaret performer; daughter of Gordon & Sheila MacRae), Alan Campbell (Tony Award-nominated star of SUNSET BOULEVARD, CONTACT; TV- Jake and the Fatman), Stephen Berger (INTO THE WOODS; THE PAJAMA GAME; off-Broadway: HELLO MUDDAH, HELLO FADDAH! and NITECLUB CONFIDENTIAL), Barbara Walsh (Tony Award-nominated star of FALSETTOS, COMPANY, BIG, and HAIRSPRAY), Janice Lynde (APPLAUSE;
