Photos: Boyfriend of India victim, girlfriend tried to save him (Video)

Top news coming in to a chilly San Francisco today is about the 23-year old Indian woman who was gang-raped and then died.

Her boyfriend has now given the first interview and he says the driver, along with the other male passengers on the bus, raped his girlfriend.

The boyfriend says that he and his girlfriend tried to fend off the attackers and that his girlfriend was trying to save him, according to the BBC.

The girlfriend also tried to alert the police but her mobile phone was taken away by the attackers.

The AFP interviewed the boyfriend who was left with a broken leg and other injuries.

Her boyfriend, who is still unnamed, told press: "She tried to dial the police control room number 100, but the accused snatched her mobile away."

"This is a disgusting crime and I hope the perpetrators get punished to the full extent of the law," says San Francisco resident, Amy Tan.

Newser.com reports that the boyfriend and the girl boarded a bus with tinted windows outside a movie theater and by the time the boyfriend grew suspicious of the people in the bus and the passengers on it, the assailants had already locked the doors.

When fighting the assailants proved useless, the boyfriend begged the attackers to leave his girlfriend alone but they only proceeded to rape her and hit her with sticks, then throw the two of them out of the bus, says the boy. Passers-by did little to help them.

"They hit me with a small stick and dragged my friend to a seat near the driver's cabin." Then, the "driver and the other men raped my friend and hit her in the worst possible ways in the most private parts of her body."

The young woman was cremated and her ashes spread over the River Ganges.
