Tuesday morning, a 5 –year-old from Lancaster was beaten by her mother’s boyfriend while the mother was working.
The child, Soren Victoria Chilson, was found unresponsive by paramedics in the bathroom of her mother’s house. She later died at the hospital she was taken to.
Phillip Bryan Gleason, according to arrest records, struck Soren in the head, which resulted in her death. Police have charged him with homicide by child abuse. Gleason is facing up to life in prison if convicted.
Gleason is confirmed to be a student at Winthrop University.
“It’s an awful thing, any time you have something like this involving a child,” Lancaster County Sheriff Barry Faile said.
The Charlotte Observer is reporting that authorities responded to the home after a 911 call was made by Gleason Tuesday morning about a child with a medical problem. As of Tuesday, Gleason was being held pending a bond hearing.
“I don’t have words. I don’t know. It just makes me sick,” neighbor Paris Caskey said.
“It’s tragic; for it to be a little girl like that, it’s just sad,” said Barbara Black.
