Boy whose father 'ate' his eyes regains partial sight

The 4-year-old Bakersfield boy whose eyes were torn out of his head by his drug-crazed father is regaining vision in his one surviving eye.

Little Angelo Mendoza Jr.'s left eye is completely gone. His right eye, while damaged, is intact and slowly recovering, according to an anonymous source cited on the Bakersfield.com Web site.

Angelo is receiving regular care from an opthalmologist, and his eyesight is expected to improve, the source said.

Doctors had initially believed Angelo would be blind for the rest of his life.

Meanwhile, his father, Angelo Mendoza Sr., 34, was in court  briefly on Tuesday for a pretrial arraignment. His case was continued until June 23.

Mendoza, who is a paraplegic since being stabbed in the spine four years ago, is facing four felony charges in the brutal attack on his son, who was found in a bloody heap on his apartment floor.

Mendoza, who is suspected of being under the influence of PCP at the time, was found after the attack hacking at his own legs. Police said they think he was trying to make it look like he had been attacked in order to shift blame.

When picked up by police, little Angelo told them, "My daddy ate my eyes," and, "Daddy bit my eyes and hands," according to police reports.

Angelo's father and mother have both had encounters with the police in the past. His mother reportedly came to the father's apartment the day of the attack but left the child there, despite Angelo's pleas that he was afraid.

It makes one sick to the bone to read that a father can bite the eyes of his own son out. Being in a drugged state is no excuse. Mankind should obliterate people who deal in drugs because we are not here in this world to produce offspring as cannon fodder to the drug world. Half way measures afforded to such beasts will just make way for the beasts to flourish.

Execute this monster, along with the mother. Even though she did not have custody she could of protected her son. Sad two parents as loosers. Lets hope this child will never ever see these two monsters or family members. They are all to blame

This was the most disturbing story I ever heard of child abuse, my heart hurts for this child. So many people want to adopt children or cannot have any. This monster father, deserves a death sentence. Our tax dollars should not keep this looser in society. No mercy for child abusers, execute him
