The Boy Scouts are allowing local Boy Scout councils to decide if they want to keep bans on gay scouts and scoutmasters. Of course, they continue to ban atheists like me in their ranks, as is their right. The Girl Scouts on the other hand don't discriminate based on sexual orientation or lack of religious beliefs, which makes me feel good when I eat their cookies.
While gay rights advances in the U.S., in Russia it recedes into a dark abyss. The religious right-wing still wield much power in the U.S., but nothing like the Russian Orthodox Church does in Russia, with their BFF, Vladimir Putin, the quasi tyrant/president of Mother Russia.
A bill is proposed in Russia that would make it illegal to advocate for gay rights, such as protests. See if I was writing this column in Russia, in Russian, I could be arrested for "gay propaganda" if the bill passes. Gay rights protests would be also be banned.
Russia is a hotbed for anti-gay bigotry. Gays outside the Russian Parliament, the Duma, were assaulted while doing a kiss-in. It's quite simple if you don't want to see two men or two women kiss, don't look! Just as if you don't want to see videos of gay adult sex videos, don't look! Unfortunately, the religious right-wing in this nation still wants to ban what we watch on the internet.
