Swiss-German rock band BOY is back in Chicago for two evening performances. The band last made an appearance in the Windy City in March during its first US tour, but the performance only included its founding members—vocalist and guitarist, Valeska Steiner, and bassist and keyboardist, Sonja Glass—and a drummer. This weekend’s shows, however, will include a full band, and if it’s anything like it was at a minimal masterpiece, then attendees are in for a real treat.
“We had a very good time during this spring tour and collected so many nice memories,” reflects Glass. “It doesn’t happen very often that a Swiss-German band gets to play shows of their own in this country, and we are very grateful for this opportunity. When you are on tour traveling through countries where you’ve never played before, you broaden your horizons and learn about the differences between cultures; that’s one thing I really like about it.”
Another perk to touring the States, according to Glass, is the audience’s comprehension of the hopeful and visual storytelling that is the music they’ve devoted themselves to creating.
“Obviously, people understand the lyrics better than in most of the countries we have played so far,” Glass explains. “That makes a difference because they react stronger to the lyrics of songs, which is nice. In general, no matter where we are, the show always depends on the energy of the audience and the band.”
Despite the band’s familiarity and success (the majority of their US shows sold out in the spring) with the previous tour, Glass ensures that it didn’t impact their vision for the most current one.
“I think it is good not to expect so much,” she says. “This way you have the chance to enjoy everything that happens even more and are not disappointed by anything that doesn’t go the way you thought.”
Tonight BOY will kick off its weekend in Chicago at Lincoln Hall, followed by a Sunday night show at Schuba’s.
“We will have the chance to a see a little more of the city than only the clubs,” she reveals. “That’s the downer of touring—you never have enough time to see all the places you want to.”
After this tour wraps up, the band will fly back to Germany to take several months off to write (although before this tour began, they had taken some time off to write and record, per Glass) and relax.
“We are slow writers and want to be satisfied with the songs, so it will take some time,” Glass says. “We’ve been on tour for such a long time and have enjoyed it so much, but I’m also really looking forward to being creative again.”
Tonight’s show begins at nine, while tomorrow’s is at 7 p.m. For more information and tickets, check out LincolnHallChicago.com and/or Schubas.com. To learn more about BOY, check out their Facebook page here.
