A 7-year-old boy brought a loaded gun to Harriet Gifford Elementary School in Elgin, Illinois, according to a Chicago Tribune report on Thursday. A Romeoville man has been charged in the incident.

The 9mm gun which was found in the boy’s backpack at school belonged to Rashaad L. Byrd of the 200 block of Highpoint in Romeoville. Byrd has been charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, as well as child endangerment and possession of a weapon without a firearm owner’s identification card. Byrd was staying with the boy’s family in an Elgin apartment. It is being reported that the boy found the gun and brought it to school.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, another student saw the gun in the boy’s backpack and told a teacher at the school. The backpack was secured and police were notified. Police then searched the school with canine for about an hour-and-a-half and found no other weapons on the premises.

Parents were notified of the incident via phone and email notifications, but the school was not evacuated. The report does not indicate what the child intended to do with the gun. There were no injuries reported.
