An 8-year-old boy was mauled by a pitbull Saturday afternoon while he and his older brother were playing with the dog at a family friend’s home in Athens.
At 12:54 p.m., officers received a 911 call that the boy had been attacked by a pitbull at a home on Hidden Lake Drive, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
“Upon arrival officers found the child who had suffered multiple bites,” officials said in a press release. “Due to the child’s injuries, the child was flown by Life flight to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta.
Investigators said the child and his older brother were visiting the home of a family friend, and had been playing with the homeowner's dog.
As the two boys began to wrestle, the dog became excited and bit the 8-year-old multiple times causing very serious injuries, police said.
The 8-year-old's brother was not injured during the attack, they said.
Athens-Clarke County Animal Control responded to the scene and took custody of the dog.
It’s unclear if any charges will be filed in the incident. Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
The incident is the second attack by a pitbull reported in recent days in Georgia. A 5-year-old boy was mauled by a pitbull at a home in Macon on Thursday. In that incident the dog’s owner was arrested and the pitbull was euthanized, Macon police said.
