Melissa Pendleton, 29, and her live-in boyfriend, Jemmell Conway, 31, were both arrested on Oct. 6 and charged with felony child neglect and allowing a child to have access to a firearm, after Pendleton’s 4-year-old son managed to get a gun and shoot himself in the hand. The shooting occurred in the boy’s mother’s home in Fredericksburg, Va.
Fredericksburg Police began an investigation after getting a call from Mary Washington Hospital about 2:20 p.m. The mother had gotten a neighbor to take her and her children to the hospital after the incident.

Jemmell Conway was also charged by the police with possessing a firearm as a felon.
Conway was taken to the Rappahannock Regional and jailed without bond. The little boy’s mother was jailed under a $2,500 bond.
At the time of the shooting, the 4-year-old, along with his 8-year-old brother, were staying with their mother for the weekend. The boys usually live with their paternal grandparents.
Police are still looking into the mother’s story that the 4-year-old “had somehow gotten ahold of a handgun and shot himself through the hand.”
A spokesperson for the Fredericksburg Police said that the child is expected to recover from his gunshot wound.
