Boy 12 stabs boy 9: Suspect,12, in playground stabbing says he was 'unloved'

A young Michigan boy, only 12-years-old, fatally stabbed an even younger victim – a 9-year-old boy. The two boys involved Monday were at a playground in Kentwood, western Michigan, when the older boy took out a knife and stabbed the younger victim in the back, reportedly, for no reason.

According to Michigan Live, Michael Connor Verkerke, the 9-year-old victim, “was playing with three other children on a playground at the Pinebrook Village mobile home park around 6 p.m. Aug. 4 when a 12-year-old pulled out a knife and repeatedly stabbed him, Kentwood police say.”

Verkerke ran home, where he collapsed on the porch of his house. Neighbors said they heard the boy’s mother screaming. He was rushed to the hospital but died later that evening of his injuries.

The suspect, meanwhile, walked over to a man doing yard work, and asked to use his cell phone. The chilling conversation won’t soon be forgotten by 34-year-old Glen Stacy.

“Hi. I just stabbed somebody. Please pick me up. I want to die. I don’t want to be on this earth anymore. Please pick me up,” Stacy said the boy told the 911 dispatcher. “He was very calm,” Stacy added.

Stacy said the boy, whose name was not released to the media, told the dispatcher that he had “taken pills” and just “wanted to die” because “no one loved him.” Stacy said the boy appeared to be physically fine; there was no outward sign, such as shaking, that he had taken an overdose of any sort of pill.

“The only time he raised his voice was when the police came,” Stacy said. Police arriving at the scene first walked over to the playground area to aid the victim. Stacy says the boy yelled out to them: “Hello. I’m right here. You’re going the wrong way.”

Writes Michigan Live:

Perhaps even more unsettling: The alleged suspect told Stacy he didn't know who he'd hurt – he'd simply stabbed someone on the playground.

The boy was taken to Kent County Juvenile Detention Center for evaluation. A murder charge has since been brought against the preteen.

“We are still investigating and trying to determine a cause for this tragedy,” Kentwood police said in a statement.
