Mexican junior featherweight boxer, Francisco "Frankie" Leal (20-8-3, 13 KOs) passed away on Tuesday from a traumatic brain injury sustained during a brutal knockout in his bout with Raul Hirales. It happend last Saturday in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He was 26-years-old.
Leal, a southpaw who was a grinder as a boxer, was no match for Hilares. In round six, Hilares dropped Leal with a hard right, stunning leal who appeared to be clearly dazed. In round eight, Leal was dropped again with another shot to the head by Hilares, Leal did get to his feet, but soon collapsed and never fully gained consciousness.
The medical team rushed in to carry Leal off on a stretcher, and was transported to a hospital in Cabo San Lucas. Leal would later slip into a coma and was moved to a hospital in San Diego and died.
In March of this year, Leal was hospitalized after getting knocked out by Evgeny Gradovich. Leal, one of the greats as a southpaw, was without a doubt a tough fighter, he always fought with grit and heart and proved he could bang with the best of them.
He will missed, if there is a silver lining to this story, it would be the fact that Francisco "Frankie" Leal died doing what he loved.
