When it comes to trash talking or one sports figure discussing another sports figure; it isn't unusual for one's talents to be brought up and attacked. It also isn't uncommon for an athlete to hear their mettle, bravery, or determination attacked when it comes to how they're playing.
But to say one simply isn't "black enough" is a bit of a reach.
Boxer Bernard Hopkins decided to take it upon himself to discuss Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb and let the passer know exactly what he thought of him. Mind you, Hopkins is a huge Philadelphia Eagles fan and that is of course McNabb's former team.
Hopkins invited the press to a workout on Tuesday as he trains for a big fight and when asked about Michael Vick and the Eagles, the boxer decided to turn his attention to McNabb.
"Forget this," Hopkins said, pointing to his own dark skin. "He's got a suntan. That's all."
The point of it all was that McNabb grew up in a so-called priviliged childhood in suburban Chicago and therefore is not tough enough, or black enough, when compared to Hopkins himself or Vick. It also goes back to Terrell Owens' time with the Eagles and then up to McNabb's trade to the Redskins.
"Why do you think McNabb felt he was betrayed? Because McNabb is the guy in the house, while everybody else is on the field. He's the one who got the extra coat. The extra servings. 'You're our boy,' " Hopkins said, patting a reporter on the back in illustration. "He thought he was one of them."
As Yahoo Sports reports, the "house vs. field" issue that Hopkins is discussing deals with an original quote from Malcolm X even though you may be able to get the idea.
Looking back at history, Hopkins just doesn't seem to care for McNabb all that much since this isn't the first time he's attacked the quarterback. In 2007, he said McNabb didn't have the heart of then Eagle Jeff Garcia. Then in 2008, he said McNabb wasn't someone would sacrifice everything to win and that he had "no killer instinct."
Let's not forget the party Hopkins wanted to have as McNabb left the Eagles.
The belief is that this all comes from the time Hopkins showed up late to an Eagles team function and was then ignored by McNabb. Otherwise the two really have no other history together so it's a wonder to all as to why Hopkins keeps harping on the guy.
McNabb's publicist has stated that he will have no rebuttal comment.
